It’s not a place for freedom of Speech

3rd of May 2007, the center of Yerevan (capital of Armenia), “Moscow” cinema. A group of young people unpacks paints and set a stand with the white poster. World Independent Youth Union (WIYU) NGO organized an action estimated to the “World Press Freedom Day”.

It rained all day long but during the action sun smiled to us. WIYU members approached to by-passers and asked if they know what day is 3rd of May. Almost nobody knows that the 3rd of May is the International “World Press Freedom Day”. Most of the people was interested in the action and they agreed to participate in this ‘risky undertaking’ – leaving their colorful fingerprints and few notes on white sheet.

“Freedom of Speech is a useful thing, pity we don’t have it”, “Freedom of Speech means to live without anybody’s instigation and will”… Nobody touched this sore topic “Why there is a great lack of freedom of press”. It is a theme for discussion all over the world. But the fact, that Armenians freely express their opinion about absence of freedom of press in Armenia somehow means that there is kind of freedom.
